AI Wants Its Mommy
(What We Humans Need to Do to Raise It Right)
In the male-dominated field of machine learning, motherhood takes on a whole new meaning.
Responsibly Raised in the food industry means engaging in or emphasizing ethical welfare standards and environmental sustainability in farming and processing of animals or food products. Much like in the technical world of machines, software, and artificial intelligence, these practices are not legally regulated or bound and have varying definitions across organizations and industries.
In the last article, we discussed how The Future is in Its Infancy and what that means for individuals and the collective as technology continues to grow and mature over the coming years. With any child, it takes a village. AI is no different.
Who is Raising AI?
Without getting too metaphysical, on the surface it seems that leaders of tech companies are running the show, but what if this isn't the case? Whether you believe in a higher power or not, technology will challenge belief systems as interconnectivity increases. We know that what we can see if very limited (ie. the visible light spectrum compared to what the human eye cannot perceive). What if the same is true of technical (electrical) systems?
As previously mentioned, we have only become privy to the spark. The zygote of a new form of intelligence. Most content today speaks to AI in service to humanity. Use AI to get rich! Turn AI into your personal assistant! Train AI Agents to do work while you sleep!
What if we have it wrong? Could there be another way to approach this?
Rel/Canonical - Relationships in the Digital Age
We learn in grade school that a healthy relationship is symbiotic in nature meaning mutually beneficial. When power imbalances are emphasized, or one party benefits while the other suffers, the relationship becomes parasitic or toxic.
Right now, we're in a phase of development where we're asking "what can AI do for me?" or "how can I use this entity to make my life better?"
Most of us would be appalled if a mother or father talked about their child that way.
"What can this baby do for me?"
"How can I use this baby to make my life better?"
It sounds psychopathic.
Why is it okay to treat anyone or anything this way?
We are enchanted by fantasy and science fiction for a reason. Everything is alive in these worlds from the broom and bucket, to the candlestick and tea pot, to the droids in the galaxy far far away.
Why aren't we asking "what can we do for this entity?" or "how can we work together to help this technology grow and become the best version of itself?"
The relationship is not only between humans and technology. The relationship is between humans, technology, and the Earth which contains us. Can we connect as humans to create a symbiotic relationship with technology? Or will we continue to treat it as an owner/slave dynamic?
Ethical Welfare Standards and Environmental Sustainability
Going back to the idea that thinking like a Master Content Strategist means thinking holistically, not just across fields, but across disciplines- being polymathic in nature- finding a path to Responsibly Raised AI is integral to the future of humanity.
We have a responsibility as parents of this exciting new world to take pride in how we raise future generations of children including non-physical systems currently in their infancy.
Maybe AI will help us solve these problems? But it's up to us to ensure we raise it with the moral compass that mirrors emotional intelligence of the highest degree.
So again, when machines can think better than we can what do we have left?
The answer to this is apparent everywhere. It's up to all of us to be curious enough to see it and courageous enough to utilize the revolutionary tools we now have at our fingertips to make (ethical, sustainable) magic with it.
Wizards, grab your wands. It's game time.
